Charging for plastic shopping bags has started

On July 1, 2020, charging for plastic shopping bags started nationwide.

Plastic is a very convenient material, easy to mold, light, durable, and highly airtight, contributing to our daily lives in every field; for example, by reducing product weight, reducing food loss, etc.
On the other hand, there are issues such as restrictions on waste and resources, marine plastic waste, and global warming, so it is necessary to control the excessive use of plastic and use it wisely.

We would like to take this opportunity to ask for your cooperation in reducing use of plastic shopping bags.

Types of Paid-for Bags

Plastic shopping bags with a handle for carrying purchased goods

Stores subject to charging

  • All retail business stores that handle plastic shopping bags.
  • Even if the main business type is not retail (manufacturing and service industries), the store should charge for plastic bags when retail is conducted as part of its business.
  • In addition, if a store has no continuity as a business, such as a refreshment booth in a school festival or a one-time flea market, it is not subject to the order.
