Japanese Events and Holidays in August

Obon

Obon is a traditional Japanese event to welcome the spirits of ancestors. Obon is held from August 13th to August 16th, and people usually take a few days off to return to their hometowns and visit their family graves.

August 6th: Hiroshima Genbaku no Hi (Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima)

August 9th: Nagasaki Genbaku no Hi (Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki)

August 11th: Yama no Hi (Mountain Day)

August 11th is a national holiday, Mountain Day. The purpose of this day is to give people an opportunity to get acquainted with the mountains and to appreciate the benefits of the mountains.

August 15th: Shusen Kinenbi (Anniversary Commemorating the End of the War)
